When in doubt about anything, ASK...and.... ask EARLY - don't leave it until the assignment due date. Your lecturers, tutors and College administration staff are here to help you. The staff from the Academic Skills and Learning Centre (ASLC) located on the lower ground floor of the Pauline Griffin Building (building no. 11) also provide advice, workshops and support -- the ASLC is open during term and vacation break. They all want you to succeed!

Learn how to properly reference sources by:

  1. Investing in a current edition of the proper citation and style manual(s) Ask at The Co-op Bookshop located in Union Court,

  2. By borrowing manuals from the ANU Library in person. Citation manuals are kept at all Library Information Desks or you can find them by using a search in the online catalogue for "Style Manuals"

  3. Using online guides either from the ANU Academic Skills Centre or those linked from your ANU College websites

5

Cite ALL outside sources used, whether quoting, paraphrasing, or borrowing ideas. Referencing your sources enhances your work. Work out a way to always keep the source reference with your notes as you research. It's easy to copy & paste and then forget where you got the information - trying to find it later is time consuming and really hard!

4

Information taken from the Internet must also be attributed. Before using Internet-based material, be sure to evaluate the credibility of the website.

Seriously consider reporting academic dishonesty when you see it occur. It's not fair to YOU when others cheat.

2

Say NO to people who encourage you to engage in plagiarism, or ask you to assist them in doing so. Don't let others use you or your work.

THE TOP TIP
OF ALL!

Academic misconduct can seriously jeopardize your academic career, your future, and, if you are an international student, your ability to stay in Australia to study. Your reputation is important.

A newly graduated lawyer was "struck off" (no longer able to practise as a lawyer) in November 2007 in the Victorian Supreme Court, because he colluded in the preparation of a university assignment. What happened??

Guard your reputation well!
